Tenderloin Children’s Playground and Rec Center
The work on BAWCC’s first multiple-year project started soon after we completed our first Tenderloin Kids Count, BAWCC’s building-to-building survey of children living in each Tenderloin apartment building and residential hotel. When we learned that there were more than 4,000 children in the small Tenderloin neighborhood, we went to work!
BAWCC worked with Youth Advocates on the 10-year effort to bring the first purpose-built children and youth building to the heart of the Tenderloin. To the delight of neighborhood families and children, the Tenderloin Children’s Playground and Recreation Center opened in 1995. It has served up to 200 children a day with their many kid-friendly programs.
