BAWCC's work to advocate
for the families and children
of the Tenderloin has
resulted in the construction
of five city playgrounds.
Hundreds of Tenderloin
neighborhood children and
families rallied to raise
awareness about the need
for a nearby school.
With “Tenderloin Kids Count,”
BAWCC conducted regular
building-by-building counts
of the children in the
neighborhood, and found 3,500
kids who needed a school.

  • Tenderloin NETWORK of Children, Youth, and Family Services
The Network, facilitated by BAWCC's director since 1983, brings together staff of organizations which provide services to children, youth and families in the Tenderloin. The Network meets on a monthly basis throughout the year (taking summers off) and rotates the meeting locations so organization's staff members have the opportunity to visit and learn more about other Tenderloin organizations. This is an opportunity to share information on resources and programs to benefit the community.

  • “Tenderloin Kids Count”
Since 1984, BAWCC has, on a regular basis, conducted building-to-building surveys throughout the whole Tenderloin neighborhood to collect the numbers, ages and race/ethnic origins of the children living in the Tenderloin. BAWCC staff members conduct this survey with graduate students from UC Berkeley, Stanford, and other graduate programs from throughout the Bay Area.
This information is then disseminated to local agencies, various city departments and others who may want to support the expanse of services and programs for Tenderloin children and families.

  • Surveys of Tenderloin Children & Family Issues
On a regular basis, BAWCC conducts comprehensive, neighborhood-wide surveys of the issues related to families and children living in the Tenderloin. BAWCC then uses this information to generate the long-term projects and programs it undertakes. It also initiates advocacy projects related to the issues parents and youth raise related to their lives in the Tenderloin.
For example, BAWCC's Tenderloin Gradeschool Campaign (the campaign to get the Tenderloin Community School and Family Center built) was initiated by BAWCC after our 1998-1990 Survey which identified problems related to young Tenderloin children's education.
